Rafael Villicana, MD

Associate Director, Kidney Transplantation, Comprehensive Transplant Center

Rafael Villicana, MD is Associate Director of Kidney Transplantation at the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Villicana is also an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology, Dr. Villicana is a specialist in transplant nephrology and is a member of several professional associations, including the American Society of Nephrology and American Society of Transplantation.

As the 1996 recipient of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) International Research Scholarship, he has presented research findings at national meetings including the American Society of Nephrology and has published articles in peer-reviewed publications including the American Journal of Kidney Disease. His research interests include living donor outcomes and methods to increase transplant rates such as the Extended Criteria Donor program (ECD).

Dr. Villicana received his bachelor's degree from the University of Southern California and his medical degree from Michigan State University. He fulfilled his residency at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine and completed his transplant and nephrology fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
