Selecting the Correct Preventive Antibiotics Before Surgery

Selecting the correct antibiotic to give a patient before surgery is essential to preventing infection as a complication of surgery.

Giving the wrong antibiotic for the type of surgery that a patient is having will not be effective in preventing infection.

The chart below compares the number of patients who received the approriate preventive antibiotic before their surgery at Cedars-Sinai to other hospitals nationally and in California.

A higher number is better than a lower number.

The chart above shows how Cedars-Sinai's performance on this measure compared with the top 10% of hospitals in the United States, the national average for hospitals, the top 10% of hospitals in California and the California average. These data reflect care given to patients at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from January through March 2008. The national and California data reflect care given to patients from January 2007 through December 2007.
