Adrenal Tumors
If you have a tumor of the adrenal gland, you may be a candidate for minimally invasive removal using laparoscopy at the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute.
If you have certain conditions of the adrenal gland, such as Cushing's syndrome, pheochromocytoma, aldosteronoma or an adrenal tumor that was found by accident, you are usually a candidate for removal of the adrenal gland by laparoscopy.
If the enlargement of your adrenal gland is identified as a malignant tumor or a metastasis (an offspring of another tumor elsewhere in the body), you may still be a candidate for the laparoscopy approach, if the tumor(s) is smaller than seven centimeters and no other organs involved.
Three small incisions are made into the abdomen to allow surgical instruments to enter the abdomen and reach the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland is completely freed up inside the abdomen. It is taken out through a small cut in the midline in the skin. No muscle is cut. Thus, you have less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery. This procedure usually requires an overnight hospital stay.
The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute specializes in treating patients who have had failed previous treatment attempts, very large stones, strictures or tumors. Children and patients with bleeding disorders or gross obesity are also treated at the Institute.
