Promoting Healthy Weight Loss

Being obese can subtract 20 years from your life. Many researchers believe that after smoking, obesity is the second leading preventable cause of death in North America. Although it is often perceived as a cosmetic problem, obesity puts individuals at increased risk for many serious conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, endocrine disorders, cancer, sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease and arthritis, as well as knee, back and joint problems.

The Cedars-Sinai Center for Weight Loss provides a complete range of medical and surgical treatment services for adults and adolescents ranging from the somewhat overweight to the morbidly obese. Center physicians thoroughly evaluate each patient and provide the individualized care that is crucial to effective and long-lasting treatment success. This unique, comprehensive program addresses the medical, behavioral, nutritional, and, if necessary, the surgical issues related to obesity.

The center also offers medical treatment for obesity. While losing weight can be difficult, studies have shown that a multidisciplinary approach including dietary changes, physical activity and behavioral modification is the most effective way of achieving and maintaining weight loss.

Our expert team of doctors, dietician and behavioral specialists help you not only achieve your ideal weight but address lifestyle changes that enable you to achieve better health. The Center helps you reach and maintain weight loss by medically proven techniques including meal replacements, individualized dietary plans, weekly behavioral classes and support.

Cedars-Sinai physicians have led the way in developing techniques for minimally invasive bariataric surgery. The bariatric surgical team specializes in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. This type of bariatric surgery involves smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery times for patients. Because of the laparoscopic expertise of our bariatric surgeons, the Cedars-Sinai Center for Weight Loss was selected as a site for testing the novel Lap-Band procedure. This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat obesity and is now FDA approved.

Our multidisciplinary approach draws from Cedars-Sinai's research and technology, as well as our medical and surgical expertise. We recognize that severe obesity is a complex, chronic disease that has many causes and no simple explanations. Our program provides you with behavioral and nutritional services to move forward with your life after bariatric weight loss surgery or to effectively manage your weight through our medical weight management program. The ongoing support and education we provide allows you to make the most of your life as you continue to manage your weight loss.
