Alfredo Trento, MD, FACS

Director, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Alfredo Trento, MD, FACS is the Director of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and holds the Estelle, Abe and Marjorie Sanders Endowed Chair in Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Trento is also Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Certified as a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Trento has focused much of his extensive research and studies on life-saving heart and heart-lung transplantation procedures and techniques, as well as critical care cardiology. He has received grants from the American Heart Association Grant-In-Aid to study the augmentation of right heart output by skeletal muscle in fontan operation and another for studying compliance and histological changes of cyropreserved jugular vein allografts after homotransplantation.

Dr. Trento has made more than 60 professional presentations on cardiac transplantation and heart-lung transplantation and has written more than 130 articles, book chapters and proceeding papers on cardiac topics, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and surgical management of infant congenital heart disease.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Trento is also a member of numerous other professional and scientific organizations, including the International Society for Heart Transplantation, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Western Association of Transplant Surgeons.

Dr. Trento completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Padua, Italy, where he earned his medical degree. He served internships in internal medicine at Cittadella General Hospital in Padua and the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, where he completed his general surgery residency. He completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and became Director of the ECMO Program at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
