Lawrence Czer, MD, FACC, FACP

Medical Director, Heart Transplant Program

Director of Transplantation Cardiology

Lawrence S. C. Czer, MD, FACC, FACP is the Medical Director of the Heart Transplant Program and Director of Transplantation Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Czer is also Professor of Medicine in Residence at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is the Director of Transplantation Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai. He also serves as Director of 6-ICU, and he directs the cardiac surgical and heart transplant databases at the Medical Center.

A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Czer is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Society of Echocardiography. He served as Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Committee of the International Society of Intraoperative Cardiovascular Ultrasound.

Dr. Czer's research has focused on experimental and clinical aspects of heart transplantation and the intraoperative evaluation of valvular heart disease by Doppler ultrasound techniques. He has interests in preventing coronary atherosclerosis and cytomegalovirus disease after heart transplantation, new techniques of heart transplantation and its alternatives and new approaches to heart failure (such as myocardial cell transplantation). Dr. Czer has presented his findings at lectures and conferences in the United States, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Israel, West Africa and Australia.

Dr. Czer has written numerous book chapters, including contributions to Heart Valve Replacement: Current Status and Future Trends, Echocardiography and Doppler in Cardiac Surgery, Textbook of Color Doppler Echocardiography, Medical Management of the Cardiac Surgical Patient, Intraoperative Use of Echocardiography, Doppler Echocardiography, Cardiac Anesthesia, Transesophageal Echocardiography and Critical Care Medicine: Principles of Diagnosis and Management.

Dr. Czer has also written articles for peer-reviewed publications, such as the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology, American Heart Journal, Texas Heart Institute Journal, Transplantation, Transplantation Proceedings, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeon, Transplant Immunology, Clinical Transplantation, Pediatric Transplantation and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Czer received his bachelor's degree from UCLA and his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine. After an internship and residency in medicine at the UCLA-San Fernando Valley Medical Program, he completed his cardiology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center under the directorship of H.J.C. Swan, MD, PhD. He also completed a year of research in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery before joining the full-time staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
