Richard B. Mertens, MD, PhD

Pathologist; gastrointestinal pathology, breast pathology

Richard B. Mertens, MD, PhD is a pathologist in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai.

Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, Dr. Mertens specializes in gastrointestinal pathology. He is a recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Award from Cedars-Sinai and the American Gastroenterological Association Student Research Prize.

Dr. Mertens has written several articles for peer-reviewed journals, and he is a member of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Dr. Mertens received his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Davis and his medical degree and doctorate in physiology and pharmacology from the University of California, San Diego. He completed a residency in pathology at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle and a fellowship in anatomic pathology at Cedars-Sinai.
