Samuel H. Pepkowitz, MD

Co-Director, Transfusion Medicine; transfusion medicine, pediatric pathology

Samuel Pepkowitz, MD is Co-Director of Transfusion Medicine in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Pepkowitz is also Assistant Clinical Professor of Pathology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Pepkowitz is board certified in pediatrics and in anatomic and clinical pathology with a special qualification in blood banking. His research interests involve apheresis, autologous blood deposits before radical procedures and post-transfusion hemorrhage.

A former president of the American Society for Apheresis, Dr. Pepkowitz is an active member of many professional organizations, including the Scientific Technical Advisory Committee for the Los Angeles and Orange Counties Red Cross Blood Services. He is also a current member of many committees at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Pepkowitz has written 40 articles for peer-reviewed publications and has authored book chapters for Apheresis: Principles and Practice, Current Pediatric Therapy, Modern Transfusion Therapy and Obstetric Transfusion Practice.

Dr. Pepkowitz received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a pediatric internship and residency at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric pathology at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, followed by a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he again was Chief Resident.
