Phlebotomy Certification Program

The Phlebotomy Certification Program at Cedars-Sinai was approved by the State of California in May of 2003. For more information about the new California phlebotomy regulations, visit the Laboratory Field Services website.

Our phlebotomy course consists of at least 60 hours of lectures plus at least 40 hours of practical experience in our hospital. Applications must be received at least two months prior to the start of the class, because interviews are required and orientation must be scheduled. Eligible applicants must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and be able to speak, read, comprehend and write basic English. The fee for this class is $1250 and the course will take four weeks to complete the lecture portion, and further time may be required to complete the practical portion. Class sessions are scheduled each January, May and September/October. The hours for this class are as follows:

  • First week = 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Weeks 2 thru 6 = as early as 5 a.m. to noon.
  • Further time may be required to complete practical hours.

Completing all portions of this program plus passing an approved national exam will allow the candidate to apply for phlebotomy certification by the State of California.
