Resume/Cover Letter Pointers
Because we want to assure you the best opportunity to apply for a suitable position at Cedars-Sinai, we offer the following suggestions.
Cover Letter
A one-page cover letter is good to send with your resume. Write about your job interests, what times of the day you can work and what salary you expect, since this may affect your match to future vacancies. Also be sure to give the reference code, if any, on advertisements. If you are updating a resume that you already sent in, please let us know what information has changed.
Resume Tips
- Use standard typeface fonts in a size of 10 to 14 points. However, please avoid 10-point Times New Roman.
- Use standard 8.5 x 11 white paper with black ink.
- Give details about your job experience, including the knowledge, skills and abilities that relate to the position(s) you are seeking. Please give your most recent experience first.
- Tell what kind of equipment (computers, typewriters, forklifts, temperature-controlled food cart, etc.) and software (Word, Excel, Quark, etc.) you have used.
- List the licenses and certificates you hold, such as a California drivers license, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, RN, CPA, etc.
- Use job-specific functions and terms.
- Mention any foreign languages you speak or understand.
- Be specific about your educational achievements, listing the specific degrees and dates received.
- List employers' name, the positions you held, start and end dates and specific job duties in your employment history.
- Describe personal traits, such as dependable, time management skills, high energy, etc.
- Submit an original resume. Do not send a photocopy.
- Limit resume to one or two pages, one-sided only.
- Put name, address and phone number on top of first page (one phone number per line).
- Place name on top of second page.
- Use laser or ink-jet quality printer.
- Use standard one-inch margins.
- Use bold type or ALL CAPITAL LETTERS for headings only.
- Use typical headings, such as summary, qualifications, skills, education, experience and licenses.
- Do not staple or fold your resume.
- Do not use italics, shading, underlining, columns, graphics, large fonts, bullets or reverse print.
- Do not attach licenses/certificates or letters of recommendation. These will be reviewed during an interview.
