Center for Women's Continence and Pelvic Health

The Center for Women's Continence and Pelvic Health at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for women who suffer from disorders associated with the female pelvic floor, including:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Difficulty in bladder or bowel emptying
  • Urinary frequency and urgency
Pelvic floor conditions can cause a variety of symptoms, such as urinary urgency, urinary frequency, loss of urine, painful urination, difficulty in passing urine or stool, pelvic pressure, protrusion of a mass through the vagina (prolapse) and involuntary loss of stool.

Urinary Incontinence

Approximately 11 million women are affected by urinary incontinence, but less than 10 percent seek medical treatment. Many of these women could be helped and successfully treated with simple procedures, medication or rehabilitation. Incontinence can occur as a result of pregnancy or childbirth, injury to the pelvic region or spinal cord, neurologic disease, infection or degenerative changes associated with aging.

Identifying the Problem

Early detection and treatment is key to creating a positive outcome. For an accurate diagnosis and to identify the cause of pelvic floor disorders, the Center for Women's Continence and Pelvic Health provides complete urodynamic testing, including:

  • Complex uroflowmetry
  • Multichannel subtracted cystometry
  • Evaluation of leak-point pressures
  • Urethral pressure profilometry
  • Pressure-flow voiding studies
  • Cysto-urethroscopy
  • Video-urodynamics

Treatment Services

The Center for Women's Continence and Pelvic Health integrates multiple disciplines, including physical therapy, urogynecology, female urology and nursing, to provide customized quality care to every patient. The center offers comprehensive treatment options for women with pelvic problems, ranging from nonsurgical treatments, such as medication and pelvic muscle rehabilitation, to surgical procedures.
